The UK's GB productivity problems are not an efficiency problem: it's an engagement problem.1/30/2025 ![]() Author - Dan Corpe, Thrivall Co-founder & Director of Partnerships. “Is the world better off because your business is in it?" - Paul Polman (ex-CEO, Unilever) This is a guiding principle for me and the businesses I am a part of. Time ⏰ again we hear how we're 6th lowest out of the G7 in terms of productivity. Time again we're told we need to be more efficient! Less talking to your colleagues, more effective use of time... The reality is that a recent study showed that 90% of the UK's 🇬🇧 workforce are not engaged with their work, 90%!! 🤯 It really doesn't matter how efficient your company is, if your people aren't engaged with what they do they simply won't produce their best work. They're unlikely to go above and beyond and do amazing things unless they have purpose for what they do and have great people, who care to lead them. Do managers and leaders realise the impact they have on their colleague's wellbeing? In a recent survey it was found that managers have the same impact on our mental health as our partners/spouses, just let that sink in... What we also know is that leaders and managers must prioritise their own wellbeing, to be able to look after the wellbeing of the colleagues in their charge. We've heard the analogy before, but it bears repeating - Put your own oxygen mask on first" unfortunately it seems too many leaders and managers don't follow this advice. Right now, there are three major problems facing UK businesses right now, as shown on the graphic below and with leaders and managers being solution to the problem, it's time for them to start prioritising their own wellbeing. If you're a leader or manager, what will you do today to prioritise your own wellbeing?
